MECOS 1
International Symposium on Marine Ecosystems – Challenges and Opportunities, 9-12 February 2009, Cochin
There is a general concern that the marine ecosystems are under stress due to several anthropogenic impacts such as fishing, pollution due to domestic and industrial effluents, climate change, dredging, navigation, exotic species etc. This stress is leading to ecosystem deterioration, loss in biodiversity and stakeholder upheavals. On the other hand, it is also recognized that the goods and services provided by marine ecosystems are not adequately and optimally utilized, and there is scope for potential use of the ecosystems for consumptive and non-consumptive purposes.
MECOS 09 recognizes these challenges and opportunities and recommends the following options for conservation and optimum use of the marine ecosystems:
