The Marine Biological Association of India has instituted a biennial Dr. S. Jones Centenary Award for researchers who have made outstanding contributions in marine biology and fisheries, and the first award was given to during the Prof. (Dr.) B. Madhusoodana Kurup on August 26, 2011.

Prof. (Dr.) B. Madhusoodana Kurup, the first Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), the first Fisheries University of India has made commendable research contributions to marine biology and fisheries. The Marine Biological Association of India conferred the first Dr. S. Jones Centenary Award to Prof. (Dr.) B. Madhusoodana Kurup for his outstanding contributions in marine biology and fisheries. Dr. Kurup is an efficient teacher and an excellent researcher with an illustrious and productive career spanning over 32 years in various capacities and has successfully guided 14 students for their doctoral degree. He has published 95 research papers in peer reviewed journals of which 27 are in international journals with high impact factor.  As many as 18 sponsored projects from international agencies like European Union, New Zealand Agency for International Aid, Netherlands Organisation for International Co-operation, Indo-Dutch programme and national agencies like ICAR, MoES and Govt. of Kerala have been meticulously executed under his able supervision.
