Mungo Park's contribution to the ichthyology of the East Indies.

Abstract

Mungo Park visited Sumatra in 1792 making a collection of marine fishes, some of which were later described as new to Science. Part of this collection has recently been re-discovered in the British Museum (Natural History) collection. These specimens are listed, the types re-described and some original manuscript notes and paintings by Park are also listed. A short account of his contribution to the early development of ichthyology in the region is given.
