Topic of the Study: “Sea Turtle nesting grounds identification and its Conservation along the south east coast of Tamil Nadu”

Highlights of the study

Turtle nesting ground was identified by coastal walking along 4 coastal districts along Tamil Nadu coast covering 210.75 km and identified nesting grounds was plotted in map with geo-coordinates using Q-GIS on Google earth. The soil characteristics were analysed and correlated, turtle mortality was also estimated through direct observation. The coastal vulnerability index was calculated based on physical parameters and each parameters was weighed and risks calculated.
60 nesting sites have been identified in which 5 are new for Olive Ridely turtles. The conservation awareness among stakeholders was found to be low and awareness programmes have been initiated. For effective management of these resources, managerial initiatives have been also been suggested.

Topic of the Study: “Management of pathogens in aquaculture by way of administering natural pyocyanin”

Highlights of the study

In this study, pyocyanin produced by environmental isolates of P. aeruginosa MCCB 102 and 103 has been studied for its effectiveness as an aquaculture drug against vibriosis and WSSV. The main concerns of the study were related to the toxicity of pyocyanin on biological systems and its effectiveness in controlling the bacterial load of recirculating system used to rear P. monodon under field conditions, along with potential in-vitro anti-WSSV activity of pyocyanin. 
The results of the study revealed that pyocyanin when applied at a concentration of 5 mg L-1 did not inhibit the nitrifying bacterial consortia used to activate stringed bed suspended bioreactor (SBSBR) of RAS used for rearing juveniles of P. monodon maintained at 15 g L-1 salinity. The present study also revealed that pyocyanin could bring down significantly the total heterotrophic bacteria in RAS including that of Vibrio spp. under field conditions.
The present study has demonstrated the efficacy of pyocyanin as a safe and environment-friendly prophylactic drug for application in shrimp culture under RAS to control Vibrio spp. without interfering with nitrification through deployment of nitrifying bioreactors.
