Abstract

This note presents the effects of different sublethal concentrations of the surfactant Sodium

Lauryl Sulfate on the protein, glycogen and free sugar concentrations in various tissues hepatopancreas, muscle and gill of a freshwater prawn, Macrobraclzium rosenbergii. The analysis  of tissues was conducted on the lSt,8th and 15th  day after exposure at 0.5 ppm and 1.0 ppm sub lethal levels. The results showed that there were general fluctuations in the level of protein, glycogen and free sugar concentration on all the tissues of the treated animals when compared to the untreated animals at all levels of the surfactant. The analysis showed that the hepatopancreas registered a maximum decrease in protein concentration followed by the gill and muscle. The level of glycogen decreased very significantly in the hepatopancreas. The total free sugar concentration showed a characteristic increase in all the tissues analyzed with hepatopancreas exhibiting the maximum increase.
